CALYPSO OBSERVATORY

The Calypso Observatory is a private observatory founded in 1992. It is located on Kitt Peak, in the Tohono O'odham Reservation near Tucson in Arizona. This mountain is home to telescopes operated by Kitt Peak National Observatory and other institutions including Calypso. In 1999, Calypso Observatory started the operation of its 1.2-meter altitude-azimuth telescope built on the southwest ridge of the mountain, a site of good seeing. The telescope design and its optics have been optimized for high resolution imaging in visible wavebands. An adaptive optics system attached to the high resolution camera (HRCAM) was installed in the fall of 1999. A wider field camera (WFCAM) useful for survey work came online in the fall of 2001.
